There is also loose tobacco that comes in a pack or a can. The pack is small enough to roll about 40 cigarettes, while a can comes with much more. The can of loose tobacco is more expensive, but will last you longer. The more expensive brands have better rolling papers and the tobacco is smoother. The cheaper brands have the worst rolling papers that rip very easily, do not roll very well and the tobacco is harsh.

However, if you decide to go for the cheapest brand of loose tobacco then you will save even more money but you will not have a good smoking experience. Smoking is not good for you anyway but if you are a smoker you will not only want to save money but you will want to have a good smoking experience. Experiment with the different brands and flavors to see what best suits your taste and wallet.

Step 2: Gather Your Materials

In order to roll your own cigarettes, there are several necessary supplies. These include:

  1. Tobacco
  2. Rolling papers
  3. Filters to drop in the end of the cigarette (optional)

There are many types of tobacco as well as papers. With a little trial and error you will find the combination that you prefer. Ask someone at the store and they should be able to get you started.

Choosing Your Rolling Papers

Packs and cans of loose tobacco come with their own rolling papers that are usually good enough. Rolling papers have glue on one side of them to hold the cigarette together when rolling it. You may not like the kind of rolling papers that come with the pack or can of loose tobacco you choose. There are many other kinds of rolling papers that you can choose from. Some are more expensive than others.

Some types of rolling papers are thinner while others are a little thicker and hold the cigarette together better. The thinner ones are usually the cheaper ones and they are not the best value. If you choose the cheaper ones you will be wasting your money because they rip easily and do not hold the loose tobacco as well as the more expensive kind of rolling papers.

Also, some rolling papers are wider than others, will hold the homemade cigarette better and make it longer. These kinds of rolling papers are not that expensive but they are more expensive than the thinner and smaller ones. Choose a rolling paper that will hold the loose tobacco better and one that will make a good homemade cigarette. Bugler and Zig-Zag are popular brands of cigarette rolling papers.

Step 3: Prepare to Roll

Find a flat spot to put your materials on. One possible option is the kitchen table. You may also want to use a plate to hold the tobacco, though you don't need one. It will, however, keep the tobacco from spreading around.

Place enough tobacco in the plate (or on the table) to roll the amount of cigarettes you want to make during this sitting. Also, open the papers and take one out of the package.

Hint: you may want to take out (so they will be loose) as many as you want to roll up. This saves you one move between each cigarette you roll.

Step 4: Roll Your Cigarette

Once you have everything assembled, you are ready to actually roll a cigarette.

  1. Hold the paper in your hands with the glue strip facing up and towards you.
  2. Fold the bottom of the paper from the bottom up to just below the glue line and make a crease.
  3. Hold the paper in such a manner that the crease opens up and makes a pocket.
  4. Drop in some tobacco into the middle of the paper.
  5. Spread the tobacco out so that there is a slight dent toward the middle and the tobacco goes to both ends of the soon to be cigarette.
  6. Fold the bottom of the paper over the top of the tobacco and begin to roll the paper back and forth (up and down) until the tobacco is about even and firm. With a little practice you will get a feel for how tight to make the tobacco.
  7. Lick the gum along the top edge of the paper. With your thumbs and index fingers roll the paper all the way around. The glued edge will stick to the side of the now made cigarette.
  8. Be prepared to waste a few papers getting the technique down.

Tips

  1. Practice with a friend who knows how to roll a cigarette. Watch how they do it and mimic what they are doing to learn how to roll a cigarette.
  2. Don’t give up on your first try if the first one falls apart. Keep trying until you get it right.
  3. Make sure the papers you get with your loose tobacco has a glued edge so the homemade cigarette will stay together.
  4. To keep your loose tobacco fresh, cut a potato peel and place it in the container. By doing this, you will have fresh and moist tobacco for easier rolling and it will keep the tobacco moist at all times.
